Why gold is priced per troy ounce
The global benchmark for gold is the price of one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of pure gold, quoted in US dollars. The troy system dates back to the medieval market town of Troyes in France and remains the standard for precious metals. Because a troy ounce is about 10% heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g), mixing the two is a common and costly mistake, so this converter always uses the troy ounce for gold.
Common gold weight conversions
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams ≈ 32.1507 troy ounces
- 1 tola ≈ 11.6638 grams (South Asia & the Gulf)
- 1 pennyweight (dwt) = 1.5552 grams
- 1 grain = 0.0648 grams
The table above applies these factors to the live spot price, so the price per gram, per ounce and per kilo always reconcile with the gold calculator and theby-currency table.
