How to read gold performance figures
Each row compares the latest daily closing price with the price from a set number of days ago, then reports the absolute change per troy ounce and thepercentage change. Green means gold gained over that window; red means it fell. Periods longer than our stored history are left out rather than estimated, so every figure shown is backed by real data.
Why look at multiple time frames
Gold can look very different depending on the window. A sharp weekly move can run against a steady yearly trend, and a strong multi-year gain can hide painful drawdowns along the way. Comparing short and long periods side by side gives a more honest picture of momentum and volatility than any single number.
Performance vs. the price chart
This page gives you the exact returns over fixed periods. To see the continuous trend behind those numbers, view the gold price history chart. For the current spot price and today's move, see the live dashboard, and to value a specific holding at today's price use thegold value calculator.
A note on interpretation
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Gold pays no income, and real-world returns from owning physical metal are also shaped by dealer premiums, storage and insurance. These figures are provided for general information only and are not investment advice.
Help
Frequently Asked Questions
How has gold performed over the past year?
The table above shows gold's change over standard lookback periods (today, 7 days, 30 days, 6 months, 1 year and longer) in both absolute terms per troy ounce and as a percentage, using our stored daily closing prices.
What time periods does the performance table cover?
It covers a ladder of periods from one day out to as long as our stored history allows (up to multi-year windows). Periods that predate the data we hold are omitted rather than estimated, and they fill in as more daily prices accumulate.
Is gold a good long-term investment?
Gold has historically preserved purchasing power over long periods and is often held to diversify risk, but it pays no income and can be volatile over shorter spans. This page is informational and is not investment advice.
How is the percentage change calculated?
For each period we compare the latest daily closing price with the closing price from that many days earlier, then express the difference as a percentage. The absolute change is shown per troy ounce in your display currency.
Does performance include dividends or income?
No. Gold does not pay dividends or interest, so the figures are pure price change. Returns from holding physical gold would also be affected by storage, insurance and dealer spreads.
